The first question to ask in every website project

Every company has a love-hate relationship with their website. Many love to ignore it and hate to do anything with it. But, inevitably every company, at some point, will find themselves in the place where they desperately need a new website because they look old and outdated. This post is for you.

If you are only redesigning your website because it is old, stop. Don’t do it. You need a better reason, a better goal, than simply “we don’t want to look old.”

You guessed it, the first question to ask in every website project is, “what is the goal?” For some businesses the goal might be to have a better validation tool, i.e. look good online. If so, that is fine, but you need to know what your goal is and pursue the project from that standpoint. Don’t start a website project as a reaction to something, start it because you want to do something better because you have a goal in mind!

Here are a few website goals I recommend considering:

  1. A better validation tool to help close more deals. This is the most common reason for having a killer website, and a good one too. If your website looks professional, people think you are professional and will want to do business with you. The opposite is also true.
  2. Get more calls. Even if you aren’t currently using your website to get business, maybe you should be. How much value would you get from one more call per month about your business? How about five more calls per month?
  3. Capture potential client’s data. Maybe you don’t want calls; maybe you want a potential customer’s email address. Use your website to encourage them to give you that information and then create a plan to reach out to them proactively.
  4. Increase your position of authority. One of the best, and easiest, ways to be seen as an authority in your industry is to have great content on your website that matters to your clients and customers.

I could go on, but you get the idea. Start with a definable goal, then build a website that will help you crush that goal! It will make all of the difference in the outcome of your new website project.
